After establishing himself as a musician’s musician in his native Omaha, Nebraska, jazz saxophonist Jeremy Carter – weary of the freezing midwestern winters – relocated to the Tampa Bay area in 2001.
It didn’t take long for the accomplished-in-multiple-styles player to make his name here in a similar fashion.
Carter is today’s guest on the Arts Alive! podcast. He talks about what it takes to make a living as a professional musician.
“I wear just about every hat in the bin, out of necessity,” he explains. When Covid-19 took live performances off the menu, “just to stay relevant, you start teaching, you start doing internet stuff, podcasting, collaborating with other people, recording … you get pretty versatile and creative.”
Carter and his quartet have a gig Saturday night at the Side Door Cabaret, the intimate space inside St. Pete’s Palladium Theater. The program is called Pure Imagination.

He’s played dozens of shows at this venue, each focusing on a different style, or a different jazz artist. But Carter takes jazz, so called, into all sorts of unique locales.
This set’s title comes from the theme song for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

“Throughout the entire show – it’s more than just that one song – I’m using arrangements from friends of mine … it’s a pool, it’s really like a gumbo of creativity. It’s something people will want to go see.”
