It was 42 years ago today that the eyes of the world were on Southern New Mexico and the landing of STS-3 Columbia. Like much else in New Mexico, it wasn’t easy. The day of return from low earth orbit the Columbia was supposed to land in California but the weather there was such that landing Space Shuttle Columbia was not possible and while the Kennedy Space Center return landing strip was finished the weather wasn’t good there. So it was hello New Mexico. But March 29th with hundreds of television and newspaper reporters in our area the weather was Putrid. The dust and wind was 50 miles an hour and worse. A newsman asked me, “How can you stand to live here?” I told him wait until tomorrow which was a sparkling wonderful New Mexico morning that made most of the people forget the day before.
