Let me ask you if you have ever been in this situation: You are coaching your team members or a team member about a process change. The goal is to improve the results you get for your team or for your customers, but it does involve a change in tactics or process for this person or for your team in general. (Side note, this applies outside the work environment, but we are going to use the context of leadership today.)

Some team members will inherently see that, while it might mean a change for them, it will bring about a better result from what they are seeing. It might even mean more work or work that is less comfortable, but they understand the strategy and the “why” behind it.

Meanwhile, other team members seem to get stuck on principle. They are resistant to change because they see the current methods sufficient. They think that the responsibility lies elsewhere…that the failure to achieve the desired result is a failure on the part of someone else, and by changing the way we do things, we are enabling bad behavior in others.

They get so stuck on what their idea of “fair” is, or the desire to stick it to someone else, that they fail to see the logic and the strategy in being willing to be part of the solution.

If you can relate and you want to hear my two cents of how to navigate this situation, stick around, cause I’m about to tell you what I have learned.

  • To some, it is more important to be right than to get results.
  • If every decision you make results in everyone being happy and comfortable, chances are, you are not effectively implementing and managing change.
  • We all need to be challenged. If we are not challenged, we do not grow.
  • Get curious about the feelings that lead to a behavior.
  • Get comfortable with discomfort.
