Hi, Fellow Dad!

Do you want to provide your children with good books, but you aren't sure where to start, or how to determine if a book is really good or not? As we prepared to launch this podcast, my family had a discussion around the dinner table about some of the myths people believe about books, and their comments sparked the outline for this episode.

If we're going to find the treasures in books, we've got to watch out for counterfeits!

—Nathan

Outline & Quotes

“The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.” - Proverbs 14:15

Don't believe everything you've heard!

  1. Myth: old books = good books.

  2. Myth: Little children need dumbed-down books and cartoonish illustrations.

"No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond." - C.S.Lewis

  3. Myth: If it’s a children’s book, it’s appropriate for children.

"It is the books we read before middle life that do most to mold our characters and influence our lives." - Robert Pitman

  4. Myth: Christian authors and Christian publishing companies always produce only trustworthy content.

  5. Myth: We should read only authors who agree with us 100%!

  6. Myth: If it's worth reading or listening to, it has to be written by a well-known or popular author. Some of the best authors are not very well known. In this episode, I mention Egerton Ryerson Young, Louise A. Vernon, and Arnold Ytreeide as specific examples.

💡 "Myths abound and they are convincing. Don't believe every word you hear--or read. Filter everything by truth. And let the word of God be your filter."

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” - Philippians 4:8
