The South African Human Rights Commission or SAHRC says the police service failed in its basic mandate to detect the planning and execution of the violent unrest and looting, which devastated parts of Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng in July 2021. Initially released in January 2024 in KwaZulu-Natal, the July Unrest Report was launched today for the second time in Gauteng, a province that was also severely impacted by the violence and looting. The unrest resulted in over 350 fatalities and extensive damage to businesses and shopping centres running into billions of rands. In this SAFMNews clip, South African Human Right Commissioner, Prof Tshepo Madlingozi had this to say.
