G. U. Pope (George Uglow Pope) was born in Canada and moved to Sawyerpuram near Thoothukudi, TamilNadu at the age of 19 as a Christian missionary. He learned Tamil fondly and translated great Tamil classics: Thirukkural, Naladiyar, and the composition of Saivite Tamil hymns, Thiruvasagam. அமெரிக்கத் தமிழ் ஊடகம் - அறிவோம் அறிஞர்கள்களை. ஜி.யூ. போப் குறித்து வழங்குபவர் மேகலா இராமமூர்த்தி. ஜி.யூ. போப் - ஜார்ஜ் அக்ளோ போப் என்ற இயற்பெயர் கொண்ட ஜி.யூ. போப், கனடாவில் பிறந்தவர். தமது 19ஆவது அகவையில் கிறித்தவ மதபோதகராகத் தூத்துக்குடிக்கு அருகேயுள்ள சாயர்புரத்துக்கு வந்தார். தமிழை விரும்பிக் கற்றுத் திருக்குறள், நாலடியார், திருவாசகம் போன்ற சிறந்த தமிழ்நூல்களை ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழிபெயர்த்த பெருமகன்.
