The number of Americans who could be displaced by rising seas will triple by the end of this century. That’s the new conclusion of scientists who studied the impact of climate change on coastal areas. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts sea levels could rise 8 inches to 6.6 feet by 2100, depending on the speed and extent of polar ice melt As many as 13.1 million people in the United States will be in the path of flooding by 2100, three times the current population that resides in low-lying coastal areas. Researchers estimate that 4.9 million people could be forced from the coasts if the seas rise 2.95 feet, and coastal areas don' take protection measures such as dikes or man-made buffer island. The number displaced could balloon to 13.1 million if seas rise 5.9 feet. Although we won't be around to see this devastation, we have the ability to stop it for the coming generations. .
