Chulalongkorn Day

ในประเทศไทย วันที่ 23 ตุลาคมของทุกปีเป็นวันปิยมหาราชค่ะ

คำว่า “ปิยมหาราช” หมายถึงกษัตริย์ที่เป็นที่รัก

ซึ่งในที่นี้หมายถึงกษัตริย์รัชกาลที่ห้าค่ะ

พระราชกรณียกิจที่สำคัญของพระองค์คือการเลิกทาส

ซึ่งก่อนหน้านั้น ในสมัยรัชกาลที่สาม คนไทยประมาณหนึ่งในสามเป็นทาส

สาเหตุที่มีทาสเยอะ เป็นเพราะว่าถ้าพ่อแม่เป็นทาส ลูกที่เกิดมาก็จะเป็นทาสเหมือนกัน

และถ้าไม่อยากเป็นทาสอีกต่อไป ก็ต้องหาเงินมาไถ่ตัวเองค่ะ

แต่ว่าในสมัยรัชกาลที่ห้า พระองค์ได้ทรงออกกฎหมายให้ราคาทาสแต่ละคนลดลงทุกปี

และพออายุ 21 ปีก็จะไม่ต้องเป็นทาสอีกต่อไป

หลังจากการเลิกทาส คนไทยจำนวนมากก็มีอิสระ สามารถทำงานเองได้

รัชกาลที่ห้าจึงเป็นที่รักของชาวไทยค่ะ
