How to Start a Coffee Shop (Featuring: Jonathan Madrigal)
Manage episode 390596064 series 3540497
Jonathan Madrigal is not your average coffee shop owner. Born in Costa Rica, adopted to Michigan a year before graduating high school, he is certainly no stranger to adversity. Perhaps a big reason why he’s been able to own and operate two of the Valley’s most notorious and excellent coffee shops, Berdena’s.
It’s a coffee shop, not a coffee house or cafe. A coffee shop. And like many things, Madrigal makes it clear that there are levels to coffee and places that serve coffee. With an itch to fill a void in the Scottsdale coffee scene, Madrigal took a leap of faith in his early twenties, with no formal coffee industry experience, but supported by his family who continues to collaborate and influence Madrigal.
His mother is an interior designer and overall incredibly creative, and alongside his sister, who formally introduced him to specialty coffee - Madrigal had to honor one last woman in the family. His grandmother, Berdena.
Berdena’s coffee shops are clearly built, designed and operated with passion and love, and you feel it when you walk through the doors, along with the permeating scent of meticulously curated, sophisticated roasts from Madrigal’s ever growing network of talented roasters from across the country and around the world.
Tune in this week to learn more about Madrigal’s journey, specialty coffee and the ins and outs of opening a coffee shop.
