Music is the universal language. It can soothe, inspire, and heal your soul. And the stories you hear through the lyrics have the power to literally change your life.

In episode 72, Genny spoke with Robb Nash, a Winnipeg musician, about how music and storytelling have saved not only his life but the lives of others. And he was generous in sharing his story with her. When he was 17 years old, Robb suffered major head injuries in an automobile accident. Dealing with severe mental health issues, he turned to music, inspiring him to share his story with others through music.

He created the band, the Robb Nash Project, an immersive concert experience that engages audiences and addresses topics related to mental health. In 2007, Robb began performing in Canadian high schools as a motivational speaker and musician.

To reach as many students as possible, Robb created “A Living Curriculum: Stories of Life Through Darkness”, a student-focused wellness curriculum that uses real-life stories and music to support social and emotional learning. Their objective is to foster an environment of empathy and hope and to nurture a community of support.

Since the project started in 2009, the Robb Nash Project has reached more than a million students through school shows and social media. As Robb says, “We aren’t trying to change the world; we’re trying to create world changers.”

A registered Canadian charity, their mission is to reach more students through school shows and add more stories to “A Living Curriculum”. If you would like to support their mission, please click on the donate button on their website.
