Comparing EFT Tapping with other Trauma Informed Techniques
This series of interviews is the culmination of a desire to help illustrate the similarities and differences that exist between the Emotional Freedom Techniques and other therapeutic and clinical approaches currently being practiced. For this series we have selected a variety of trauma-informed clinical approaches that we felt would be useful for both practitioners and the public to get insight into how EFT is similar or different to these other techniques. We have carefully chosen clinicians who have either had years of clinical practice or are trainers in these other methods and who also are well trained and familiar with EFT in order to bring you a comprehensive perspective.
EFT Tapping Training Institute’s Alina Frank and Craig Weiner interview EMDR expert Carol Odsess, Ph.D. to discuss the differences and similarities between these modalities.
Carol is a licensed psychologist in private practice in San Diego, California. She has considerable expertise in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and is both an EMDRIA Approved Consultant in EMDR and an EMDRIA Certified Clinician (EMDR International Association). She also participates in teaching other psychotherapists EMDR as a facilitator in EMDRIA approved trainings. Carol also has extensive experience and training in the most popular form of Energy Psychology, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). She taught EFT to other psychotherapists as an adjunct faculty member at JFK University for ten years and she has taught EFT to psychotherapists in private workshops and at various agencies. Carol has taught EMDRIA approved classes she created on “Enhancing EMDR with Energy Psychology”, which specifically teach EMDR therapists how to use EFT, and how to integrate EFT into their EMDR work. Since 2016, Carol has also been incorporating IFS (Internal Family Systems) into her work with clients and consultees. She has completed the IFS Institute official Level One and Level Two trainings. Carol divides her time between psychotherapy, teaching and consultation. She provides consultation to EMDR and EFT practitioners locally though individual mentoring and group consultation. She also provides consultation to clinicians nationally by phone and Zoom. For more information about Carol, please see her website at www.carolodsess.com. This comparison chart was published in the 2003 book, Energy Psychology (EP) and EMDR;
Combining Forces to Optimize Treatment, written by clinical psychologists John Hartung, Psy.D. and Michael Galvin, Ph.D.ology. For over 25 years they taught EMDR and EP methods in more than a dozen countries and co authored various manuals in EMDR. In the book they begin by comparing EMDR and EP and then describe the training models they have used to teach these treatments to professionals and paraprofessionals alike.
