A new U.S. Surgeon General report has found that tobacco use causes 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. Although the country has made great strides in reducing tobacco use, health disparities and new products entering the market make it difficult to achieve a smoke-free future. The Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been leading tobacco prevention, cessation, and control, and the office's director joins us to discuss the progress made in decreasing tobacco use, as well as the challenges and work ahead.
Dr. Deirdre Lawrence Kittner is the director of CDC OSH. She has more than 20 years of public health experience, with a focus on global tobacco control, tobacco and health behavior science, and policies for eliminating health disparities. She has previously worked at the National Cancer Institute and served as deputy director of the Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products' Office of Science.
