Chinas dynastische Herrschaft beginnt vor etwa 4000 Jahren mit der Errichtung der Xia Dynastie. Nachdem Yu der Große die Herrscherwürde vom letzten mythologischen Kaiser Yao erhält, schafft er die traditionelle Nachfolge ab und etabliert die dynastische Herrschaft seines eigenen Klans. Allerdings bleibt weiterhin fraglich, ob die Xia Dynastie tatsächlich existiert hat oder doch ins Reich der Mythen und Legenden gehört.
