It’s less than a couple weeks until Thanksgiving, and my thoughts turn to gatherings and celebrations. I think about the lonely people who aren’t invited to any gatherings, or who haven’t found their “people” yet. I have hosted hundreds of Meetups in a Seattle area social club, and always looked for new creative ideas besides just going out to Happy Hour, meeting up at a cafe or meeting for dinner at a restaurant.
This is a non-fiction book that strives to help us create meaningful gatherings, whether large or small, for work or for leisure. The author was an event coordinator, and examines meetings (such as conferences, a flash mob party, and an Arab-Israeli summer camp) to talk about what works and what doesn’t. She’ll help us make changes to our events to invigorate them, including a dinner party, a backyard barbecue, a conference or a business meeting. Chapters include “Decide Why you’re Really Gathering,” “Close Doors,” “Don’t be a Chill Host,” “Create a Temporary Alternative World,” “Never Start a Funeral with Logistics,” “Keep Your Best Self out of My Gathering,” “Cause Good Controversy” and then “Accept that there is an End.”
