Navigating family dynamics can be a tricky terrain, especially when it comes to giving and receiving unsolicited advice. Diane and I share candid anecdotes about the importance of communication, understanding, and mutual respect. We emphasize how different families manage to constructively support each other, highlighting the importance of love and respect in maintaining healthy family dynamics. This heartfelt discussion reinforces the uniqueness of each individual's journey and the significance of maintaining open channels of communication.
Shifting gears, Diane recounts her unexpected path to advocating for disability inclusion, starting from giving haircuts to children with sensory issues to co-founding a nonprofit supporting employment for the broader disability community. We touch on the emotional challenges faced by clients and their families and the societal barriers that hinder inclusion.
Our conversation also introduces "Learn Grow Repeat," a family project aimed at fostering a supportive community for personal and spiritual growth. Diane and her family envision a virtual space where people can connect and grow together. Finally, we reflect on the power of overcoming adversity and finding fulfillment through community engagement, capturing the essence of living a life aligned with deeper values.
Diane Dickson has dedicated over 30 years to working with individuals with disabilities, focusing on advocacy, direct services, and employment support while raising six amazing children. After a 7 year stint with the school district, she co-founded a nonprofit employment services agency in 2018. Diane and her family have recently launched Learn Grow Repeat, a web-based platform aimed at fostering community building around personal development and self-improvement.
