Airplanes use to offer two seat options, first class and economy. Today there are many different options; main cabin, comfort plus, etc. Before long they will say, “Everyone who didn’t fully understand the Broadway Musical ‘Cats’ may come forward.”
But there is one coveted row where everyone wants to sit, and that is the emergency exit row. Many airlines are now charging extra for the row due of the extra leg room it affords. When flight attendants will ask for volunteers to sit in the exit row, hands will shoot up like it’s a low bid at an auction. If you’re assigned to that row, you will be asked if you’re willing to remove the emergency exit door and assist others in exiting the plane.
Only once, in decades of flying, did I witness someone question what was happening. A kind lady who was sitting in the emergency exit row said, “I have a question. How much does the emergency exit door weigh?” The flight attendant responded, “Hmmm, approximately 40 pounds.” The woman said, “Honey, if I can’t open this small pack of pretzels you gave me, how in the world am I going to lift that big ole door? Just seat me somewhere else.”
It was refreshing to see someone who took a potential emergency situation seriously. She was willing to sacrifice more leg room for the sake of what would be best for everyone else.
Emergencies happen all around us, but what if we approached life with an awareness of others who may need help opening a very special door? Special because of Who is standing on the other side. When that door is opened, lives are changed eternally.
