Welcome to episode 2 of Season 2, where we had three exceptional guests to discuss journalism and philanthropy:

  • April Lindgren, a PhiLab researcher and the principal investigator for the Local News Research Project at Toronto Metropolitan University. It was one of April's research projects "Philanthropic support for local journalism: A Canadian road map" that gave us the idea to do this podcast.
  • LuAnn Lovlin, Director of Communications & Marketing at The Winnipeg Foundation which is a registered charity and community foundation
  • Emma Gilchrist, Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director at The Narwhal, the leader in non-profit journalism in Canada

In this podcast, we will talk about philanthropy and journalism, a field that is facing an ever-changing environment. New technologies, economic conditions, and more recently a pandemic, are all factors that can deeply impact the world of information. In this changing reality, new media, but also new business models are emerging and philanthropy is playing an important role, as foundations, such as The Winnipeg Foundation are accompanying media in their evolution.

In the episode, we tried to cover many issues to help our listeners understand the complexity of these changes. Along with April, we were joined by Emma and LuAnn, with whom we discussed community foundations, journalism, taxation, and most importantly, the active role of philanthropy in the development of nonprofit journalism in Canada.
