或許第一樣要澄清的，是Frankenstein並不是我們印象中深綠色滿佈疤痕的怪物，而是怪物的創造者Victor Frankenstein。書的另外一個名字是The Modern Prometheus，Prometheus是希臘神話裏創造人的神。而在書中，這個怪物是從來沒有名字的，就好像Mary Shelley夭折的孩子一樣，無名無姓。故事並非平鋪直敘地講述Victor如何創造怪物，而是透過一層層的抽絲剝繭，如New Yorker的評論比喻是一個Russian doll。故事開始是一個探險家在往北極途中的家書，講到途中在冰層中遇到的怪事。在冰天雪地之中，他遇到了一心要找到怪物的Victor Frankenstein。Victor訴說與怪物斗纏的故事，裡面又包含了怪物對Victor充滿哀怨孤單憤怒的獨白。我驚訝203年前的故事，現在讀起來竟有點電影感⋯⋯
