Privilege is an important element to consider when discussing the different experiences of people. The idea of privilege means acknowledging that you possess a set of traits whether physical, economical, political or social that gives you an added advantage over someone else. In the world of dietetics and health, thin privilege is something we need to be discussing. Full transparency we both have thin privilege, but we think it's so important to really explain to listeners like what is thin privilege? How does it show up in everyday life? And why is this important for those who do have thin privilege to acknowledge it? During our conversation we discuss the idea of thin privilege and how it shows up in everyday life, how society overlooks bigger bodies and why comparing thin shaming to fat shaming is counterproductive. In this episode we cover:
  • Encounter thin privilege and how it shows up in everyday life [1:05]
  • Thin privilege and our society overlooking larger bodies [5:36]
  • The shame and stigma of having a bigger body [10:59]
  • Thin vs. fat shaming [13:45]
  • How to be an ally and the language you use [19:06]
