S2 Ep 4: Intersectionality (and more) in Nutrition
Manage episode 257959938 series 2639871
Firstly: this is not a COVID-19 related episode. Both of us want to keep our podcast anxiety-free when it comes to that side of things, but we do want to give our listeners our best wishes and hope you are staying safe and at home in this unpredictable time.
In this ep, we talk about how society and culture has affected and can affect nutrition and health outcomes. This includes discrimination, the patriarchy, feminism, diet culture and more. If there’s one thing we ask you to do after this pod it’s make a list of your own privileges in the world - whether that be gender, race, ability, education, and anything else you can think of!
*Jargon-y terms:
- Universal Health System: where the government covers all or most of your medical needs (e.g. in Australia, we have Medicare)
- Cis-gender: a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex
- Queer (in regard to gender identity): umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities who are not heterosexual or are not cisgender
- Capitalist society: an economic/political system where a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
- Patriarchy: a social system where men hold the primary power, and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property.
DISCLAIMERS:
- Apologies if you can hear typing in the background of the episode! Important work things happening during these crazy times.
- Apologies for the delay in the audio between the two of us! We will get this cross-continental podcasting down pat soon (we hope).
