This week on The Last Word, we sat down with Robbie Butler, an Ulster Unionist MLA, who was first elected in 2016. No stranger to podcasts, having become involved in the ‘Mind Your Bap’ podcast in an attempt to tackle the issue of youth mental health, we felt he was the perfect person to have on the show, as our first political guest. As his party’s mental health spokesperson, he has arguably been one of the assembly’s biggest advocates for improving mental health in recent years, and one of only two MLA’s to answer our call to attend our rally in January. Providing an insight into Northern Ireland’s political system, (or lack thereof), his honesty regarding the mental health crisis is both refreshing and frightening, and shows that the true extent of the problem is almost certainly greater than we fear. Concluding, as always, by directly speaking to the young people listening, his advice is both realistic and helpful, especially given the vast problem of self-esteem among teenagers in the last few years.
