This episode of Ugandan Art Speaks Out features Adnan Ssenkumba, a remarkable sound recordist and sound designer from Uganda. Adnan is not only the co-founder and director of Omuti Kreativ, a non-profit organization that uses creative arts and media for social change, but also the mastermind behind the immersive soundscapes of Ugandan Art Speaks Out.
Adnan's career showcases his versatility as a sound professional. He started as an actor at the Department of Performing Arts and Film Makerere University Kampala, Uganda (2008-2011), and then switched to sound design after three years of rigorous training, workshops, and self-learning. He made his impressive debut in the Ugandan film industry as a sound man on the Maishia Film Lab short film, "BLACK HALL" in 2010.
Adnan has refined his skills in sound recording and design, inspired by world-famous sound designers such as VIVEC SACHIDANAND (Dubbing engineer and assistant sound designer for SLUM DOG MILLIONAIRE) and KAI TEBBEL (Post-production sound designer for DARK KNIGHT). He has left a lasting impact on Uganda's film scene, as seen in his work on important projects such as Mira Nair’s Short Documentary "A Fork, Spoon, and Knight" and the acclaimed "Queen of Katwe."
Adnan's acute sense and commitment to storytelling through sound have made him a popular partner in Uganda's film industry. His creative approach, influenced by a rich mix of training and global sources, has earned him respect and praise. Join host Gabriel Buule as he reveals the layers of Adnan Ssenkumba's sonic art, exploring the transformative power of sound in Ugandan storytelling and the inspiring journey of a rare and prolific sound professional who shapes the sound of his nation.
